How To Store Your Psilocybin Mushrooms

Proper storage of dried psilocybin mushrooms helps preserve their chemical stability and prevent degradation. The biggest threats are moisture, air, light, and heat, which can affect both the mushroom tissue and the tryptamine alkaloids it contains.

How to Properly Store Dried Psilocybin Mushrooms

1. Keep Them Airtight

Once fully dried, mushrooms should be kept in an airtight container to limit exposure to humidity and air. Glass jars or other moisture-resistant containers work well for maintaining a stable environment.

2. Keep Them Cool and Dark

Store dried mushrooms somewhere dark with a stable temperature.

Interestingly, colder does not always mean better. A 2021 study examining tryptamine stability in Psilocybe cubensis found the lowest degradation in dried mushroom material stored in darkness at room temperature. The researchers identified photooxidation of alkaloids as a probable contributor to this difference.

3. Control Moisture

Moisture can compromise dried mushrooms and encourage microbial growth. Silica gel desiccant packs can help maintain low humidity inside a sealed container.

4. Avoid Frequent Opening

Opening the container repeatedly introduces new air and potentially moisture. For longer storage, reducing unnecessary environmental changes helps maintain stable conditions.

Why Does Light Matter?

Psilocybin mushrooms are sensitive to their chemical environment, including light exposure.

Photooxidation describes oxidation reactions initiated or accelerated by light. The 2021 P. cubensis stability study found greater degradation of measured tryptamine alkaloids in dried mushroom material exposed to light compared with material stored in darkness.

The advice “keep mushrooms in the dark” has an experimental basis: light is a real variable affecting the stability of the compounds being preserved.

Storage Is More Than Temperature

The same study found something interesting: extremely cold storage did not automatically provide better preservation. Fresh mushroom material stored at very low temperatures experienced substantial degradation, while dried material kept in darkness at room temperature showed the lowest decay among the tested conditions.

This suggests that water content, light, temperature, and the condition of the mushroom tissue all matter. Simply putting mushrooms somewhere colder isn't necessarily the whole answer.

What This Means for Storage

For dried mushrooms, the goal is simple: dry, dark, airtight, and stable.

Proper storage isn't only about preventing mold. Psilocybin mushrooms remain chemically dynamic after harvest, and factors like light, moisture, temperature, oxygen, and time can influence the compounds within them.

Understanding those variables helps explain why proper storage matters rather than simply repeating the rule: “keep them somewhere cool and dark.”
